Congratulations to the Wright State Alumni Association Social Work Alumni Society! In February of 2010 the team of dedicated social work alumni established an alumni scholarship that financially supports one to three social work students annually. By the end of 2013, they will reach their endowment level.
Since the scholarship fund was established, the Social Work Alumni Society (SWAS) has been conducting numerous fundraisers to quickly build the funds to reach the $10,000 endowment level. Many wine/beer tastings, a Zumbathon, Pampered Chef fundraisers, and dine-to-donate events have helped the alumni society reach their goal in three short years.
Raising funds for the Social Work scholarship fund is only part of the mission of the SWAS. Their primary focus is to assist in recruiting and retaining social work students, faculty, and administrators, and working in an advisory capacity with the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Social Work to help provide a supportive and productive environment in which social work students can study, teach, and develop as individuals. Since the society’s inception in 2009, SWAS members have been maintaining connections with fellow alumni, the university, and current students and faculty in the Department of Social Work.
In the last five years, many of the SWAS members have taught classes in the Department of Social Work as adjunct professors, served on committees such as the Professional Advisory Council and supported their colleagues by providing training to earn CEU’s.
The team of dedicated Wright State alumni extends their support of social work students beyond the classroom. On an annual basis the SWAS committee provides students with a treat at the beginning of the fall semester to welcome them back to class. SWAS also supports the social work student’s service projects that include a Relay for Life team, a fundraiser for the House of Bread and events surrounding the National Day of Giving. They also encourage students and their fellow social work colleagues to join them for social events such as book club, ice cream socials or Wright State alumni events that they participate in as a group.
Congratulations to this dedicated team of Wright State alumni!
